Stop Tubney Quarry

Help us to prevent some of Oxfordshire's most beautiful landscape being turned into a quarry which will see up to 194 HGVs daily for 18 years extract 900k tonnes of minerals and deposit 420k cubic meters of construction waste.

If we don't stop this, there is the potential for significant impacts on our landscape, environment, ecology, wildlife and local heritage assets. Not to mention the potential risks to our local residents and businesses, including health risks.

About the plans

+18 Years of disruption | 900k Tonnes of minerals removed | 420k cubic meters of waste deposited |  up to 194 HGVs Daily | Habitats & Ecology Impacted | Disruption and Traffic to A420 |  On-site Concrete Production

A planning application has been submitted to Oxfordshire County Council to work a significant soft sand quarry near Tubney and Frilford. Over 18 years, the proposals will see 900k tonnes of minerals extracted from approx. 22 hectares of agricultural fields in Oxford's Green Belt.

As the minerals are extracted, the quarry void will be back-filled with construction waste, leaving Oxford's Green Belt forever changed.

Oxfordshire County Council are welcoming comments through their website until 19 May 2024. We urgently request you to submit your objections to help prevent this proposal.

The extent of the proposal is highlighted with the artists impression in this photo, with the brown areas representing the potential quarry site.

With 900k tonnes of minerals being removed and inert waste brought into the site, the applicant has described up to 194 HGVs per day or approx. 20 per working hour on the A420.

What happens after the 15 years? The applicant says the site will be restored.

Location: off the A420 at Tubney and extending south to border Frilford Heath, Fens & Ponds SSSI and Frilford Golf Course.

Be aware: there is the potential risk that if this site is approved, the operator could seek to extend the site north and westwards towards Fyfield (a previous application was submitted to include this area in future mineral planning considerations).

We need your help to stop this from happening.

Save Tubney by placing your objection

Save the

Traffic & Safety

If approved, the proposals will result in significant disruption to the A420 whilst the site is constructed. And, 18 years of additional HGVs on our local stretch of the A420 at Tubney.

It is deeply concerning that the proposals may significantly add to the dangers of the already fast, busy A420.

Health & Dust Emissions

Quarrys are widely reputed to contribute to noise, dust and light pollution.

The Health & Safety Executive identifies that sand contains more than 70% crystalline silica.  During quarrying, silica dust is produced, known as respirable crystaline silica (RCS).

According to the Health & Safety Executive, inhaling RCS can lead to -

i. Silicosis: a serious and irreversible lung disease that can cause permanent disablement and early death; AND

ii. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: which is a group of lung diseases, including bronchitis and emphysema, that results in chronic disability and can lead to death

Local Wildlife & Environment

The area around Tubney is an environmental haven.

We are blessed with woodland, hedgerows, designated Ancient Woodland, arable fields and Frilford Heath, Ponds & Fens Site of Special Scientific Interest.

This area is a thriving habitat which is worth protecting: we have newts, we have slow worms, we have grass snakes, we have adders,  we have deer, muntjacs, we have skylarks, bats and owls... and much, much more!

We are fortunate in the wide variety of birds, reptiles and other vertebrates that have made their homes here.

Potential to extend?

With a foot in the door, we are concerned that the quarry operator will seek to extend the proposed site to the north west of the A420 towards Fyfield.

Give us a break from quarrying:

Oxfordshire County Council approved quarrying at Tubney Wood in 1990; as this working closed, Upwood Quarry was approved in 2009; as Upwood nears closure, we are now faced with this new application.

Be warned, Fyfield may be next....

Ecological & Hydrological Impact

We are concerned at the impact of the proposed development on local ecology and hydrology .

What is the potential impact on the Frilford Heath SSSI? What is the impact on local homes? What is the impact on our heritage assets bordering the site?

Noise

The sanctuary of Tubney and Frilford will be lost and replaced with heavy machinery and construction traffic.

In this area of Oxfordshire Green Belt, we will be faced with dry screening machinery, tippers, dozers, load shovelers, concrete batching facilities, HGVs and more.
